What to Expect During E-Therapy Sessions
Easily the biggest concern people have about online counseling is how it actually works. Most people aren’t that familiar with how traditional therapy sessions work – no you don’t need to be laying down on a couch with your eyes closed (you can if you want to). On this page, we’ll talk about how your Doxy.me online counseling session will work. It’s a surprisingly simple and effective way to get the therapy services you need to lead your healthiest and most fulfilling life without the need to drive to an office, take off of work or school, or deal with any of the other inconveniences you may associate with traditional therapy.
Other offices provide online counseling sessions using apps, special software, or other products that cost money, take time to sign up for, and may be tooth complicated to use. Our team uses the Doxy.me system to provide online therapy sessions. What sets Doxy.me apart from other e-therapy solutions is the ease of use. In fact, starting your online counseling session is as easy as 1,2,3:
- Get your clinician’s personalized site link, which is usually “doxy.me/ClinicianName”
- Open the link in a browser on any device
- Type in your name and click the “Check In” button
Your counselor will see your name and start the session. It’s really that easy.
The Intake Session
Your first online therapy session is sometimes referred to as an introductory or intake session. These first visits are an opportunity for you and your counselor to get to know one another to ensure you will be able to work together moving forward. It’s also a time to discuss the “paperwork” of your therapy plan. This includes answering questions like how often you’re going to meet, how you’ll pay, what your insurance options are, etc. Most importantly, you and your clinician will discuss why you chose to seek therapy services and what your goals are. Then, you can partner with your counselor to create a plan that will help to move you towards achieving your goals.
Achieving Your Goals
Following the initial session, we encourage our clients to think of ongoing sessions as opportunities to problem solve, develop skills to address specific challenges, plan to lead a safe and fulfilling daily life, and set and achieve other goals. During your session, the counselor will likely begin by “checking in.” That means they’ll ask how things have been going, give you an opportunity to relate any new information, and help you review your progress on any “homework” you set during previous sessions. In short, your sessions are an ongoing conversation with a skilled clinician who has the resources to help you achieve your goals and lead a healthier life.
